Abstract:
The Greater Horn of Africa is a climate hotspot region that needed to cope with consecutive failed rainy seasons and devastating flooding in the last decades. Improved predictions of temperatures, rainfall and water availability months ahead could help to better prepare in water management and to allow anticipatory action. That holds particularly true for the Blue Nile River and its Grand Ethiopian Rennaissance Dam. We report about our current achievements in improving ECMWF’s SEAS5 seasonal predictions for the Greaster Horn of Africa region with both statistical and AI based techniques, hydrological and sediment load modeling of the Blue Nile river, and also subsequent crop yield modeling. The webinar closes with an analysis of forecast dissemination pathways of seasonal predictions.
