Within the framework of the ENRUC project, the Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems at TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), organized an online introductory training on Water Accounting Plus (WA+) on 2 and 10 December 2025. The two-day training targeted early-career professionals and researchers from Nile Basin countries working in water and environmental fields and was delivered in English.
The training aimed to provide the participants with foundational knowledge of the WA+ framework and its practical application for rapid water accounting assessments. Participants learned to analyze water balance components, distinguish between consumptive and non-consumptive water uses, and apply WA+ methods to support sustainable water resources management and allocations.
Over a total of eight hours of instruction across two days, the program combined lectures, model demonstrations, guided exercises, and discussions. The interactive format allowed participants to work through WA+ indicators step by step, interpret key outputs, and discuss how these tools can be used in real-world decision-making contexts in the Nile Basin.
By the end of the training, participants had gained an overall understanding of WA+ and were able to conduct basic water accounting analyses, interpret key indicators, and relate these insights to sustainable water allocation and planning. Participants who successfully completed the program received a certificate of completion, and the training materials and tools are intended to remain a shared resource within the ENRUC network to support further collaboration and capacity building.
